There they were in Columbia Records’ sterile offices in New York to sign a contract that would ignite both of their careers: Clive Davis, the upstanding executive just getting his start in the music business, and Janis Joplin, the wild-haired howler whose band he had picked out of the kaleidoscopic lineup at the Monterey Pop Festival a few weeks earlier. After putting ink to paper, the singer said that she would like to consummate the deal by having sex with her new boss.
“She was dissatisfied with the mere corporate signing on a long conference table,” Davis recalled. “She did, through the manager, offer to do it in a much more intimate way.”
He declined, naturally, but the anecdote provided one of the highlights of Davis’ conversation with Wall Street Journal columnist Kara Swisher on Monday at Club Fugazi, the North Beach theater where his cousin Jo Schuman Silver produces “Beach Blanket Babylon.”
