The New York Times Review: Soundtrack Of Our Lives

Review: In ‘Clive Davis,’ the Evolution of a Music Mogul

Chris Perkel’s reverent documentary “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives” is a valedictory for Mr. Davis, the music executive whose Midas touch with radio hits across genres — especially at Arista Records, from 1975-2000 — is industry legend. The career of Mr. Davis, now 85, covering the 1960s to the present, is remarkable when you consider his longevity and resilience given pop music’s core audience of young listeners. Entertainment luminaries — Aretha Franklin, Puff Daddy, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Alicia Keys and many others — attest to his golden ear and marketplace savvy.

Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives, based on Davis’ 2013 bestselling autobiography and made in conjunction with The IM Global and Scott Free Productions, will premiere tonight (April 19) at the opening of the Tribeca Film Festival at Radio City Music Hall. The showing will be followed by special concert featuring performances by Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Dionne Warwick, Carly Simon and Barry Manilow.

The five-time Grammy winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and recipient of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award has, as the press release says, “signed, influenced and driven the careers of many of the most important music artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries.” This includes a slate of a-list artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Santana, Aretha Franklin, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Alicia Keys and Sean “Puffy” Combs.

“Apple is a global innovator that has revolutionized the distribution of music,” said Davis in a statement. “It is a touching honor to share the music and unique stories that have shaped my career with millions of Apple Music subscribers around the world. Hollywood Reporter: Inside Clive Davis’ Doc: Industry Lessons and “Super Emotional” Whitney Houston Moments

By Ashley Lee

“He wasn’t one of those labels execs who are out trying to party with the artists — he just cares,” says Chris Perkel, director of ‘The Soundtrack of Our Lives,’ which opens the Tribeca Film Festival.

The Tribeca Film Festival begins Wednesday with a resounding salute to Clive Davis.

The world premiere of the music-oriented documentary Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives at Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday will be followed by live performances by Aretha Franklin; Jennifer Hudson; Carly Simon; Earth, Wind & Fire; and more.

The doc’s director, Chris Perkel, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about filming the legendary producer, learning from Davis’ music industry tactics and carefully including footage of the late Whitney Houston.

Why a doc about Clive Davis?

Anybody who’s been alive over the last 50 years has felt his impact, but what’s most inspiring is how he lived his life, both professionally and personally, as someone who wasn’t bound by the identity politics and close-minded thinking that so many of us fall victim to. That receptiveness and engagement with the world enabled him to span so many genres and generations. Most people struggle with that, particularly as you get older, but he’s never done that.
